My Background

I came to College Coach after working as an assistant director of admissions at Carnegie Mellon University. While at CMU, I read applications for all six undergraduate schools but spent most of my time evaluating applications for the School of Computer Science and the College of Engineering. In addition to recruiting students and making admissions decisions, I also managed all domestic and international recruitment events for the office. Having conversations with students and families from all over the world gave me incredible insight into different curricular backgrounds, cultural influences in college selection, and how geographic location can be viewed in the admissions process. Being an integral part of on campus recruitment events also allowed me to have meaningful conversations with prospective and admitted students to assist them with their application and decision questions. Prior to my time in admissions, I was a social studies teacher for two high schools in the Pittsburgh area. I loved being able to build connections with students by helping to answer questions about applying to college, college life and academic expectations. It was these conversations that inspired me to pursue a career in higher education and continue the work in helping students to feel comfortable and confident in their college search process.
“My daughter is getting so much benefit and guidance…Her confidence has increased and she's showing a better attitude towards the whole process. She finishes every session inspired and ready to dig into the work with fresh perspective. Lauren is really amazing and a perfect fit for encouraging my daughter who is applying to computer science programs.

Why I Joined College Coach

What I loved most about my time in admissions was getting to make positive and meaningful connections with students and their families. The college application process can be intimidating, so serving as a resource for families ensured they had the proper information that allowed them to feel empowered when making their college application decisions. While I loved my undergraduate experience, I didn’t have nearly enough support in my own application process. In my role as an admissions director, I had the opportunity to deliver clear and true information to the students I met with, which was incredibly rewarding. This was especially true in my work with first-generation students. Being a first-generation student myself, I can relate to the overwhelming feelings that come from this process. Helping students navigate so much uncertainty to create an application that allows them to shine brings me great joy. It’s a privilege to be part of this journey for young adults and their families.

Some of my favorite pastimes

Spending time with my family is a big part of my life. We love sports and are watching, playing, or coaching every weekend. I also have two dogs and two cats that love joining in on the chaos. Reading has been an integral part of my daily routine since I was young. I’m always searching for the next best fantasy or sci-fi book (recommendations welcome!) Pursuing creative passions helps me to relax when life gets busy, so I’ve been teaching myself how to bind my own books and paint, and I’m. a member of my local calligraphy guild. Travel is another thing that’s very important to me. Exploring the world has helped to shape who I am today, and I’m always ready to start planning the next family adventure!
